Magazine Project

How does the design that you created demonstrate your knowledge of Magazine Design and the parts of a magazine cover and interior?

The design that I created demonstrates my knowledge of magazine design and the parts of a magazine interior because it has all the parts of a magazine interior (the headline, subheads, bylines, folios, running head, intro, body copy, pull quote, etc.), uses a consistent color scheme and consistent font styles, uses bright and clear images, and uses the "drop shadow" and "outer glow" effects. Also, I made sure the design appealed to visual hierarchy (from left to right, top to bottom) and wasn't in the gutter.

In what ways does your magazine connect to the corporate identity of the magazine? What are some design queues that you used from the existing magazine?

My magazine connects to the corporate identity of OK! Magazine because I captured the in-your-face and attention-grabbing nature that OK! and other gossip magazines are known for. In addition, I used the exact color scheme from one of their issues and tried to match their font styles to the best of my ability. Other design queues that I used from the existing magazine are the layout of the main image on the left, the image caption, the running head, the headline, the subheads, the body copy, the pull quote, and the folio.

How did completing the brainstorming packet and sketches affect your design process?

The brainstorming packet and sketches positively affected my design process because I was able to create the magazine in Adobe Illustrator faster because I had a design plan and references to use instead of just making it up as I went along.

How did you like working with a partner? How do you think working with a partner makes the design process easier and more difficult?

I prefer working alone because I know I can rely on myself to get the job done exactly how I want, but I liked working with Jen. Working with a partner can make the design process easier because you can collaborate and hear ideas you may not have thought of on your own, you can divide the work load between yourselves, and you can always give and receive feedback from each other. On the other hand, working with a partner can also make the design process more difficult because you have to compromise your ideas and make sure your partner is staying on task because if your partner doesn't do well, neither will you.

Looking at your partner's design, if you were to design your partner's portion by yourself how would it look different? What would you have changed?

If I had to design Jen's portion by myself, I may have chosen a different color scheme from another issue and used different pictures, but I think she did a great job by herself. If I had to change something, I would probably layout the headline differently because I feel like there's some empty space right under the logo, and I would change the spacing of the sublines on the right to make it look less compact.

Describe the ideal partner (co-worker / co-designer)?

The ideal partner is creative, skilled, time-conscious, and willing to hear and use constructive criticism and make necessary design changes to improve the project. The ideal partner is also equally as hard-working as you are so you can create the highest-quality project possible.
